How to Make a Pet Bed from a "Retired" Mattress Pad (and practice free-motion quilting in the process)

The other day I got a new mattress pad. The old one wasn't in bad shape, just the elastic that held it in place was shot so it wouldn't stay in place. I hated to see it go to waste, so I cut it up to make pet beds for the ASPCA. And in the process, I took the opportunity to do a little free-motion quilting practice.
